Who is the best quarterback in the NFL? According to Kansas City Chiefs‘ offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, Alex Smith is “the best in the league.”
Of course, fans of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Colin Kaepernick will beg to differ — they ranked as the top three QBs in the NFL in ESPN’s rating system, Total QBR.
And Smith? He finished in seventh place.
Not bad, but is that enough to call him the “best in the league”?
Pederson is confident that Smith will perform well on the field this season.
He told the Kansas City Star this week, “There are a lot of great ones, but over time, Alex has proven he can get it done. He’s a sharp guy, he brings a wealth of knowledge, he’s experienced, he’s a proven winner the last couple of years, and he needs a team to embrace him.”
Alex Smith played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2005 – 2012.
Last February, the 49ers agreed to trade Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for the Chiefs’ second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
In 2011, he had the best statistical season of his career, leading the 49ers to the NFC West division title.
He didn’t fare as well in 2012. Smith suffered a concussion mid-season and was replaced by Colin Kaepernick.
Time will tell if Alex Smith lives up to Doug Pederson’s statement that he’s the best QB in the NFL. Somehow that seems to be a bit of a stretch considering who he is up against.
